On Sunday 12th May more than 7,000 women took to the streets of Glasgow in the largest female running event in the UK at the Bupa Womens 10k. With participants including Jo Pavey, the fastest female 10,000 metre runner in Europe, and athlete Sonia O’Sullivan who took silver in the 5,000 metres at the Sydney Games.
Also present was a very large contingent of Chirnside Chasers and for a large number of them this was the first event they had ever run.
They found an electric atmosphere for what is the largest all-female running event in the UK. There were tears, laughter, rain drops and a great deal of banter as women of all ages and sporting ability, ran, walked or jogged the course around the south side of Glasgow, cheered on by thousands of spectators and raising huge sums of money for charity. Noise was high on the agenda, not just from the thousands of women and spectators, but from the entertainment. All the women from Berwickshire enjoyed their day with the majority of them running a personal best, Well done from all at Chirnside Chasers.
Over at Tweedbank on the same day Gala Harriers held their 10k senior race and 3k junior race. In the junior race Jamie Kinghorn finished an excellent 5th place, with Harry Fuller coming in just behind him. Also running was Archie Fuller, Daniel and Harris Ross with all the boys doing well. In the senior 10k race Stevie Ross ran a PB finishing in 41.52.
