The opening meet of the Borders Athletics circuit, hosted by Earlston Border Games, was held on Saturday in glorious sunshine. Eight Chirnside Chaser youngsters took part.
In the 800m which was won by Craig Angus of Moorfoot, Jamie Kinghorn, Kyle Taylor, Zico Field and Charlie Jones all finished strongly with Jamie first home for Chirnside. All ran well with some tough marks. In the sprints Kyle Taylor was back in action for the ‘Youths B’ 90m crossing the line in 3rd place whilst in the Youth A 90m Josh Abbott finished a very close 2nd in his heat being the back marker with a tough mark. Despite his best efforts he couldn’t quite catch them but Josh’s quick sub 10 second time beat all the other heats bar one. Nina Mcreath also had a very tough ask in her heat but she ran brilliantly coming home in 4th place.

The first win of the season was Charlie Jones in the Youths 1600m. He ran a fantastic race from start to end, looking strong and crossing the line well in front of the pack. Isla Taylor also ran in the same race and gave a strong finish to hang on for 5th place.

Back to sprints for the 200m and Zico Field ran another good heat claiming 6th. Kyle Taylor in his 3rd event of the afternoon also ran a fantastic heat claiming 2nd just missing out on the final with Charlie Jones, on a tough mark coming home 6th. The Youths A 200m heats saw Josh narrowly missing out on the final again with another good run and Jamie Kinghorn finishing in 7th place in the same heat.

Special mention to the Field ladies who also competed during the afternoon to make it a family affair. Wanda Jane Field took part in the hotly contested 90m veteran race whilst youngest member of the family Elise ran and won her age group race. A fabulous afternoon of athletics to open the Borders Summer Series which bodes well for the Games ahead. The next event on the calendar is at Hawick on Sunday 11th June.
